A Filipino family sparks a movement against hate
The Story
One night in 2022, the Roque family’s lives were upended by a stranger. He threatened them in a North Hollywood McDonald's parking lot, yelling racist slurs and assaulting Filipino husband and wife, Gabriel and Nerissa Roque, as their youngest daughter desperately called for help. We’ve all seen these incidents in the news, especially during the pandemic, when anti-Asian hate crimes increased by more than 300%. But what happens to survivors after an attack? That’s what our film is about. Through intimate access to the Roques, Be Not Afraid follows their journey from victims to leaders. Thrust into the spotlight after the attack footage goes viral, the family attempts to heal as they seek justice in court. The Roques are a charming, working-class family and they galvanize a spirited, multicultural cast of local community supporters as their case reveals the limits of the U.S. criminal justice system. Our film shines a light on the sacrifices that immigrants endure in hopes of achieving the American dream. Families are left to grapple with the gap between aspiration and reality but they don't have to do it alone. Ultimately, Be Not Afraid is an empowering story of an immigrant family finding dignity and purpose in standing up for their community and each other.Be Not Afraid is currently in post-production with an expected release date in 2026.
